budget e-commerce: paypal vs. mal's cart

PayPal and Mal's offer free e-commerce solutions. The both have the benefits that they are easy to set up, very affordable, and do not require a secure server on your end (with its associated charges and hassles).

They both have pros and cons—here is a comparison.

PayPal
PayPal is a very easy e-commerce solution for clients who don't want to spend a lot of time dealing with the computer or credit card processor. With PayPal, you sign up for a business account with them and then all your orders are processed through PayPal. When an order goes through, you receive an email with the details of who ordered what and where to ship it. Their money is deposited in your PayPal account which you can transfer into your checking account whenever you want (it takes 3-4 days to get through though).
Pros
  • Very easy
  • PayPal is popular and can add credibility, although some don't like it
  • You never see the credit card details, so you can never be accused of fraud
Cons
  • Cart is not very customizable
  • Customers have to sign up with PayPal, which is easy but they may not want to do it.
  • Like all credit card processors, they charge a percentage of each order. You may be able to find a better deal with another merchant account.

Mal's Cart
Mal's is a shopping cart solution which is hosted on their secure servers. They don't charge the credit card for you, they just collect the credit card details for you, and email you when you get an order. It is a bit more work because you have to log in each time you get an order to get their credit card information. But it looks a lot more seamless with your site, and you can set more variables like complex shipping charges and discount vouchers.
Pros
  • Works with existing merchant accounts
  • Cart very customizable—visually and functionally
  • You can upgrade to use an online credit card processor for $6/mo—plus the fee for that processor
Cons
  • You have to process the charges manually, which is more work and you have to have your own merchant account
